Mindfulness & Meditation for FIRE

Meditation is the most powerful tool in your arsenal for FIRE.

If there was one thing you could do that would improve many areas of your life, give you the superhuman ability to see your emotions coming before they cause problems, and reduce your stress, providing a greater sense of well being, would you do it?


Lucky for us there is that one thing, Meditation. This practice is nothing new and has been put to use for thousands of years in the Far East. After making a few surfaces in the West, during the past centuries, Meditation is making a comeback in a large way.


Armed with new research, conducted by the tops universities in the country, we finally have the technology to fully appreciate the impact of these wonderful mindfulness techniques. A brilliant book was written by Daniel Goleman and Richard J. Davidson, "Altered Traits". This book explains, in quite amazing detail, the benefits that can happen through the practice of meditation, a highly recommended read.

So, what does this mean for ourselves in the Financial Independence space? How can we put forth these methods to make our journey to FI faster and perhaps easier?

Armed with these tools, we'll have the focus to stick with our plan over the long term, since this is a "get rich slowly' path. We can feel our emotions creep up from below to purchase that new car solely for status or to impress the jones's. You can stop those feelings in their tracks and understand more where they are coming from. People in the Mindfulness world call this the "gap". A brief moment of reflection before those emotions are fully implemented. Awareness!


How Can I Start?


How can I get started and tap into this secret sauce you might be asking yourself? Lucky for us, there are many options, depending on what suits you best. For the tech savvy, apps such as Sam Harris's "Waking Up" and "Smiling Mind" are fantastic to get started and start to feel these benefits we've been talking about. Some of us prefer to have more of a human interaction, so for this i'd suggest finding a local group, meet-up, or class in your area. The in person experience can have many secondary benefits that you wouldn't expect, new friends, more accountability for this new activity, faster learning curve, learn different methods.
